Laptops for QuerySurge Trials
QuerySurge is a Web 2.0 application, and as such, it is designed for server deployment. Generally, we do not recommend installation on a laptop, as a) QuerySurge is not designed for a laptop environment, b) laptops do not usually provide a dedicated deployment platform, c) laptops often are connected by Wi-fi, and the laptop may change locations on the network or may disconnect (e.g. when the laptop is put to sleep) which disrupts QuerySurge. That being said, many of our customers have successfully trialed the application on a laptop. There are, however, some technical nuances of which you need to be aware when installing and using QuerySurge in this environment.
QuerySurge Installation on a Laptop
When installing QuerySurge on a laptop, it is recommended that you do so while on a wired Ethernet connection, and not on a wireless connection. Since QuerySurge is designed to be deployed to a “permanent” location (i.e., a server environment), laptop Wi-Fi connections may lead to problems, for example, when a laptop changes locations on the network.
QuerySurge Usage on a Laptop
Once you’ve successfully installed QuerySurge, there are a few things regarding general usage that are specific to a laptop environment.
You should always manually stop all QuerySurge services before changing locations on your network (e.g., moving around on your office network or bringing your laptop home with you) or putting your laptop to sleep (i.e., closing the laptop). Without properly shutting down the QuerySurge services first, these actions may cause login issues.
To shut down the QuerySurge services, you will need Admin login rights. Navigate to Start Menu > Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Administrative Tools > Services (alternatively, you can type “services.msc” in the Start Menu search bar and press the Enter key). Then, shut down each of the QuerySurge services in the following order:
- QuerySurgeStatsmon (note: older versions of QuerySurge will not have this service installed)
- QuerySurgeAgent
- QuerySurgeTomcat
- QuerySurgeMySQL
To shut down a service, right-click it and select Stop.
When you reconnect to the network in another location or awaken your laptop, you will need to restart these same services. To do this, right-click the service and select Start. Start the QuerySurge services in the following order:
- QuerySurgeMySQL
- QuerySurgeTomcat
- QuerySurgeAgent
- QuerySurgeStatsmon (note: older versions of QuerySurge will not have this service installed)
Laptop Limitations and Constraints
Laptops are often equipped with limited amounts of memory and storage compared with enterprise servers. In addition, laptops often have multiple programs running for your other tasks. Because of this, QuerySurge be limited in its access to hardware resources.
QuerySurge is a Big Data testing tool; naturally, it is asked to handle very large data sets. While QuerySurge does not impose a limit on the size of the data than can be tested, the hardware on which it is deployed does. Installing on a laptop with insufficient resources will most likely limit the size of the queries you can execute in QuerySurge.
Additionally, in some environments, we have seen unexpected networking behavior with Wi-fi connected laptops. In these cases, issues with data transfer have occurred.
